The brief was a dedicated 4K cinema — Dolby Atmos, the largest screen the room could accommodate, and a single button to take it there from bar to theatre.

For amplification and speakers, one combination presented itself clearly: Arcam’s AVR850 and KEF’s THX in-wall speaker system. The Arcam was among the first receivers to market with both DTS:X and Dolby Atmos processing in a working unit — and the only AVR available at the time with Dirac room equalisation. KEF’s THX-certified in-wall system is a natural partner: the two companies share demonstration space at most major trade and hi-fi shows, and the combination shows why.

The Sony VPL-VW320ES 4K projector — updated with HDR at launch — descends from a Future Automation ceiling lift while QMotion wireless blackout blinds lower behind it. The 130″ acoustically transparent Screen Research screen receives the image through the speaker fabric, placing picture and sound from the same plane.

Control4 coordinates the sequence. The lighting fades slowly — matched precisely to the projector’s warm-up time — so the room never goes dark abruptly while you move from the bar to the sofa. A relay integrated into the bar fridges cuts their power during playback: not a detail many would think to include, but the kind that separates a cinema from a very good room with a projector in it.

One button. The room does the rest.
